How the cidb grades contractors
The cidb Register of Contractors grades a company from 1 to 9 in each class of works. Grades 2 and up depend on the largest contract you completed in the last five years, your best annual turnover in the last two years, and your available capital, each as a share of the grade's tender value limit.
Your grade is set by the weakest of them. For grades 3 and 4 you need the largest contract and at least one of turnover or capital.
The figures used
Tender value limits and qualifying amounts from the cidb's adjustment of tender value ranges gazetted in July 2019. The cidb publishes changes from time to time; check the register before you rely on a near-threshold figure.
Worked example
A GB contractor with R12 million best annual turnover, R1.2 million available capital and a largest completed contract of R3 million: turnover alone supports grade 6, but capital and the largest contract support grade 5, so the grade is 5GB, for tenders up to R10 million. Grade 6 needs a R4.5 million contract and R2 million capital.
