What a missed notice really costs

A delay that was not your fault costs twice: the site stays open longer, so time-related preliminaries keep running, and without an extension of time the employer can deduct penalties for the same days.

A notice given in time protects both. The calculator puts the two side by side so the number is clear before the deadline passes.

Worked example

Time-related preliminaries are R365 000 a month, about R12 000 a calendar day. A 30-day delay costs R360 000 in preliminaries. With a penalty of R5 000 a day, another R150 000 is at risk without an extension of time: R510 000 in total.

Questions about the cost of a delay calculator

Which preliminaries are time-related?

The ones that run for as long as the site is open: site staff, site establishment hire, security, insurance, temporary services. Fixed items such as setting up the site office are not.

Why divide a month by 30.42 days?

Because a year has 365 days and 12 months; it gives a calendar-day rate that adds up correctly over a year.

Can I claim all of this back?

Only what the contract allows for the event and what you can prove. The calculator shows what is at stake, not what will be awarded.

What should I do first?

Give notice within the contract's period. Without it, many contracts bar the claim no matter how large it is.
