Standard, unamended conditions from Sakhani's rules library. Your signed contract may change the period. Count other periods.

Indicative only. Check it against your signed contract and the published source before you rely on it.

Source: Sakhani's rules library: the standard, unamended conditions of each edition. South African public holidays under the Public Holidays Act 36 of 1994, with declared days.

How the deadline is worked out

Each edition's notice periods come from Sakhani's rules library: the clause, the period, whether it runs from the event or from when you became aware of it, and who must receive it. The period is counted from the day after that date.

Working-day periods skip weekends, public holidays and the builders' break. Calendar-day and week periods do not; if the last day lands on a weekend or holiday, the result says so, because the contract usually does not move it.

Your signed contract wins

The periods here are the standard, unamended conditions. Many contracts shorten them with special conditions or Z-clauses. Upload your signed contract to Sakhani and the amendments are read and applied to every deadline on your projects.

Worked example

On an NEC3 ECC project the contractor becomes aware on Monday 5 October 2026 that drawings due last week have not arrived. Under clause 61.3 a compensation event must be notified within eight weeks of becoming aware. Eight weeks from 5 October is Monday 30 November 2026. An early warning under 16.1 should go immediately.

Questions about the notice deadline calculator

Which contracts does it cover?

JBCC Principal Building Agreement (2014 and 2018 editions), NEC3 and NEC4 ECC, FIDIC 2017 Red and Yellow Books, and GCC 2015 and 2025, for late information, adverse weather, instructions, non-payment, site access, unanswered RFIs and other claims.

Is the period counted from the event or from when I knew about it?

It depends on the clause. The result says which. Where it runs from awareness, enter the date you became aware; if you leave it blank the event date is used.

What if the deadline falls on a public holiday?

For working-day periods it cannot: holidays are skipped while counting. For calendar-day and week periods the result flags it. Most contracts do not extend the period, so treat the date shown as the last day.

Can I rely on this instead of reading the contract?

No. It shows the standard conditions, and your contract may amend them. Use it to know roughly where you stand, then check the clause in your signed contract.
