How price points are scored

Tenders up to R50 million use the 80/20 system: up to 80 points for price and 20 for specific goals. Above R50 million it is 90/10. The lowest acceptable price scores full price points; a higher price scores Ps = 80 × (1 − (Pt − Pmin) ÷ Pmin), or 90 × the same.

Specific goals points are set out in the tender document, often by B-BBEE level or ownership. Enter what you would claim.

Worked example

On a R5 million tender (80/20), you price at R1.1 million against a lowest price of R1 million. Your price points are 80 × (1 − 0.1) = 72. With 18 specific goals points your total is 90. A bidder at R1 million with 10 goals points scores 90 too: it is a tie.

Questions about the preference points calculator (80/20 and 90/10)

When is 90/10 used instead of 80/20?

When the tender's estimated value is above R50 million (including VAT), under the 2022 regulations.

What are specific goals?

Goals the organ of state sets in the tender to advance equity, such as ownership by historically disadvantaged people or B-BBEE status. The tender document lists them and the points each earns.

Can price points be negative?

No. A price double the lowest or more scores zero price points.

What is the break-even price?

The highest price at which your total score still equals the other bidder's. Above it you lose on points; below it you win.
